Understanding UK Motorcycle Licence Categories Explained
Navigating the UK Motorcycle Licence System
The UK motorcycle licensing system can seem confusing at first, but understanding the different categories will help you plan your riding journey effectively.
AM Licence (Moped)
Available from age 16, this allows you to ride mopeds up to 50cc with a maximum speed of 28mph. Perfect for getting started on two wheels.
A1 Licence (Light Motorcycle)
From age 17, ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW power. Many riders start here before progressing to larger bikes.
A2 Licence (Standard Motorcycle)
Available from age 19, this permits motorcycles up to 35kW (47bhp). A great middle-ground for developing your skills.
Full A Licence (Unrestricted)
From age 21 via Direct Access, or from age 24 via progressive access. No restrictions on power or size – ride any motorcycle you like.
