Mastering Road Positioning: Where Should You Be on the Road?
The Art of Road Positioning
Good road positioning helps you see and be seen, navigate corners safely, and deal with hazards effectively. Here's what every rider needs to know.
The Default Position
When riding straight, position yourself in the right-hand third of your lane. This gives you the best view of the road ahead while remaining visible to other traffic.
Approaching Left Bends
Move towards the right side of your lane to see further around the bend. This improves your view and gives you more space if you need it.
Approaching Right Bends
Position towards the centre of your lane to improve your sightline while maintaining a safe distance from oncoming traffic.
At Junctions
Your position should communicate your intentions clearly. For turning left, move towards the left side of the lane. For turning right, position towards the centre of the road.
Dealing with Hazards
Adjust your position to increase your buffer zone from potential hazards – parked cars, pedestrians, or road defects. Move early and smoothly.
The Golden Rules
- Always maintain a position that gives you the best view
- Position to be seen by other road users
- Leave yourself room to react to hazards
- Signal your intentions clearly
Road positioning becomes instinctive with practice. During your training, we'll help you develop this crucial skill.
